Halloween is a fun holiday focused around scary thoughts and surprises. Kids dress up and go door to door saying, “Trick or treat!” Some love to visit haunted houses. For me, I never understood the experience of walking into a dark home with scary sounds and bloody characters reaching for you!

When thinking about the holiday’s traditions, I realized that adults do something like trick-or-treating in business. We think about what we want to dress up to be before setting our strategy of which businesses we will approach to ask for a treat.

In sales, not having a strategy or asking for the business can be extremely scary. Many of us come to work and dress up in character only to miss the opportunity to knock on companies’ doors to ask how we can help them.

Instead of the words trick or treat, try asking yourself these three words: what, why, and how.

What – What do you want to achieve? Do you want to keep learning new things and growing? Do you want to make more money? Do you want more time? Do you want more work-life balance?

Why – Why do you want it? This is the critical component to reaching your goals. Just as every child wants the biggest bag of candy, we all want lots of clients. Do you want more clients for the money or the recognition? The reason why is the emotional energy that drives us to our outcomes.

How – How is the strategy. What approach do you need to take to achieve your outcomes? Think about how many new business connections do you need to make each week. Also, think about your current clients. Are you taking care of them? Did you ask for their business? Did you earn their business?

By being more aware of what you want and why you want it, you can eliminate the fear of how you will approach your goals.
