Creating Your Own Luck in Sales – A St. Patrick’s Day Special

🍀 While most of us associate this day with shamrocks, parades, and a pint of Guinness, we’re flipping the script and asking a big question for sales professionals everywhere.

Can you create your own Luck in sales? The answer is YES. I’m sharing three actionable strategies to help you seize opportunities, overcome challenges, and make success inevitable in your sales career.

The Myth of Luck
Before jumping in, let’s break down one thing quickly: what is Luck? Many people think Luck is random, like finding a four-leaf clover. But in sales, ‘luck’ has a different meaning. It’s not about chance; it’s about preparation and action.

The famous quote by Roman philosopher Seneca says it perfectly: ‘Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. It means that you have the power to create your Luck through diligent preparation. And that’s precisely what we’re going to focus on today.

We’ve all had moments where deals unexpectedly convert or clients seem to come out of nowhere. But Newsflash—that’s not random. Most of the time, it results from things you set into motion weeks or even months ago. The key is turning that unpredictability into a predictable rhythm. Sounds good? All right, now, onto step one.

Three Steps to Creating Your Own Luck in Sales

Step 1: Preparation is Everything

First up, preparation. There’s no room for winging it in sales—not if you’re serious about results. Think about the most successful salespeople you know. They don’t wander into a pitch, hoping for inspiration to strike. They research their clients inside out. They dig into data, track industry trends, and, most importantly, are proactive.

Here’s what to ask yourself today:
Am I prepared for the opportunities I want?
Am I anticipating objections and crafting solutions ahead of time?
Track the list of accounts you’d love to win in 2025. Once a week, put time on your calendar to research their needs, industry shifts, and pain points. The more prepared you are, the better equipped you’ll be when that client randomly’ decides to engage with you.

Step 2: Take Consistent Action

Sales is a numbers game, but it’s also an effort game. The trick isn’t finding a lucky break; it’s creating daily small wins that turn into opportunities.
Think about prospecting. Sending one outbound email probably won’t lead to anything. Sending 15 personalized emails this week? Now, you’re creating more Luck in your favor.

What actions can you take today to ‘plant seeds’ for tomorrow? Block time on your schedule each day for lead nurturing, follow-ups, or even just reaching out to past clients to stay top of mind. Remember, Luck doesn’t find you sitting still. It finds you moving.

Step 3. Cultivate Relationships That Matter

The final step? Build relationships like they’re your most valuable asset because they are. Lucky breaks in sales usually start with someone you’ve built trust with. A recommendation, a referral, or even a heads-up about an upcoming opportunity often comes from relationships you’ve taken the time to nurture.

Here are two questions to ask yourself:
Who are the three people who could help you grow the most this year?
What’s one thing you can do for them right now to strengthen that connection?
Networking isn’t about Luck; it’s about service. Build goodwill, and it will likely return to you tenfold when you least expect it.

Here’s your sales challenge for the day:
Contact three prospects or clients you haven’t spoken to in months. Keep it conversational. Maybe even toss a festive touch, like “Wishing you luck this St. Patty’s Day!”
Not only is this a great way to re-engage dormant accounts, but it’ll also set you apart as thoughtful and approachable. And, who knows, one of those three conversations might become your next big deal!”

Remember this: Luck in sales isn’t about chance but your choices.

You can share this with someone who can benefit from it.

Remember, the Luck you seek might be a conversation, an email, or an action away. Stay motivated, stay prepared, and create your Luck.
